Tellico Nymph

Tellico nymphs, along with other yellow flies, are very popular in the Appalachians. The Tellico is an old fly that was developed somewhere around the Smokies. These guys are great for both trout and bluegills. Here is my version of the classic, with some lemon wood duck. A big snowstorm blew out the streams while we were out there, so I tied up this guy while waiting for the snow to stop. I bet a pink version would work well in the Driftless…

  • Hook: #14-12 nymph
  • Bead: 3/32 gold copper bead
  • Thread: 8/0 black UNI
  • Tail: Lemon wood duck flank
  • Abdomen: Yellow yarn or floss(I used yellow GSP on this one)
  • Rib: Copper wire
  • Shellback: Pheasant tail fibers
  • Thorax: Peacock herl
  • Hackle: Gray or brown hen
